Kevin doing research in Ireland is tough. What I did that helped is went on line to the Golden Pages http://www.eircomphonebook.ie that’s the phone book for Ireland. When I went in 2002 their were about 45 people in Ireland named Brock that had phone lines. There could be more that use cell phones, but I don’t know how to look them up. I just double checked and didn’t find any Brock’s in Mayo or West Meath but there were 2 in Kildare. I was getting up at 3:00AM to talk to people there at 9:00AM so watch your time difference. Theirs a church on every corner and the people sometimes go to 2 or 3 churches. So finding church records can be tough. But if you’re in that town try the churches and don’t be afraid to offer to buy then lunch for letting you look at their books.
The best advice I can give you is just enjoy the country and the people. We like to stay in B & B’s but be sure they have a room for the guests to relax or watch TV we found talking the owners and other guests we learned a lot about the local area. The first and last nights we stayed in hotels close to the air-port .We always took Air-Lingus and you get in at 9 AM after a all night flight that no body sleeps on. So take a cab or shuttle bus to your hotel get a good nap take a cab to Dublin and see the night life. (the Oldest pub in Ireland is the Brazen Head 1160 AD it’s right on the river) Next day rent a car, when you’re really refreshed. See if your hotel can get it delivered and drop it off when you leave. Renting a car at the air-port (after an all night flight) is a mad house and it drops you into an X-way driving on the wrong side of the road. The roads are medieval, made for hand carts. So rent the smallest car (Automatic) you can get into and take far less cloths then you planed. Ask the lady of the B & B how much to do your wash (theirs few launder-mats there). Get the extra insurance on you rental car, they go over the car with a fine tooth comb. It’s easy to get a scratch or ding on those small roads. You may want to look into a GPS unit many come with Europe built in. Again some of the roads are from the Stone Age.
