According the The Life and Letters of John A. Broadus by A. T. Robertson published 1901 and available through Amazon the earliest Broadus was Edward Broaddus who came to Gwynn's Island, in the Piankitank River in Matthews County, Virgina and all the American Broadduses seem to be descended from him. The family is most likely not Welsh but Anglo Saxon and in Pembrokeshire or South Wales there is a large Anglo Saxon population. The original name was Broadhurst. All the descendants of the first Virginia Broaddus , Edward, spell the name with 2 d's except for the descendants of Major Edmund Broadus and Major William Broadus. Edward Broaddus left Gwynn's Island in 1715 and settled in Caroline County, Virginia, the lower part of the county being then King and Queen County, The Broadduses today overun Caroline County and claim kin to Andrew Broaddus (1770-1848)of Caroline a famous preacher. The Broadusses were mostly engaged in farming, physicians, lawyers, teachers and preachers--Baptist to the core. Edward Broadus had 9 children with 2 wives. From his son John came Andrew Broaddus mentioned above. From his son William came John A Broadus(1827-1895)who founded the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville,KY, was a nationally known preacher, graduate of the University of Virginia, served as a Chaplain in Lee's Army. Edward Broaddus(known as Ned Broaddus) son of Thomas Broaddus oldest son of the original Edward was killed by two of his slaves Cato and Patrick with an ax. There is a book A History of the Broaddus Family by A Broaddus, D.D. of Sparta, Virginia published in the late 1880's which has much information in it through the year 1888. I hope this is of some help to you all.
