I just found this website while I was looking for another my uncle said he had. Anyway, thanks for your initial response to the racial bias question. It was handled and worded well.

I find this site fascinating. I have long since wanted to do research on my lineage. I don't know if any of what I am about to say is helpful, but here's what I know about the (black) Broadnax families. And before I get started I am interested in a copy of your mother's work.

I am a Broadnax, though by rights I should be a Cherry. Anyway, I am from Gary, Indiana, and so is my mother's generation and her parents. My grandfather (Elmer Broadnax, Sr.) was from in El Dorado, Arkansas (dec. 1961).

In 1996 I was in Chicago and after having performed CPR on a person in the airport (Midway) I was speaking with a gate agent who was married to a Broadnax and told me about the Virginia connection -- seems that maybe my grandfaher's father had several siblings. His name was John Henry Broadnax and he married Martha Trailer. Anyway, he was also from El Dorado, but the Virginia piece may come in here in that the ticket agent (last name Whitaker, I think) said that either her husband, or maybe it was her grand (or great) grandfather was a Broadnax, who may have been an older sibling of John Henry. I remember having looked it up at the time.

I later found that there is a town in Virginia named Brodnax (no first "a") when we were going to visit Williamsburg. This fact (may have) substantiated something I had thought for years.

I always thought that Broadnax was maybe an Americanized French name (Broadneaux). (It was convenient when I was taking High School French.) Later, when I was stationed in Germany, a man who was doing quick searches for free on a military post said that the name was probably from England, near Dover (England, not Delaware), which is right on the English Channel, so maybe there was some French migration as well.

Anyway, I have seen the most significant numbers of Broadnaxes in Arkansas and Virginia generally. Most of the ones in my line are in and around Gary, Indiana. There are a few in Florida.

Of the more well-known in the last 15 years, there was Horace who played basketball at Georgetown in the 80s (now a college coach); Vaughn, who played football at Ohio State in the 80s also; Richard is a gospel singer in Germany apparently (one of the first web sites that pulls up if you do an internet search for Broadnax). There's a Ronald who just tookover a music department at Michigan State.

Then there's me -- not yet famous, but feeling really connected to most of the other famous ones -- Most of my line is very athletic. I played basketball in High School, football in college, trombone through high school, and still love them all and sing at times in church.

I think it would really be great if the Broadnaxes could get connected. Hopefully this helps.

Oh, by the way, I live in Houston, TX now, am married (my wife is white) and we have two children.
