The black Broadnax families of Leaksville (now Eden), NC, probably took their name (adding the "a" for differentiation) from either Robert Brodnax of the Cascades, Dr. Edward Travis Brodnax of Willow Oaks Farm (Robert's youngest brother), or Dr. John Grammar Brodnax (Robert's son-in-law, who took over management of the Cascades following his father-in-law's death). Dr. J. G. Brodnax was the son of William Henry Brodnax of Prince George/Dinwiddie County, VA, who was active in the African Colonization Society of the 1830s (but was unfortunate enough to be in charge of the Virginia militia during the Nat Turner insurrection of 1831).
While I'm not descended from the Brodnax family, Robert's wife (Nancy Russell Wilson) was my 4g-grandaunt, Edward's wife (Janet Hamilton Chalmers) was my 3g-grandaunt, and John's son-in-law (James Dodge Glenn) was my great-granduncle. Plus Edward and Janet raised my orphaned 2g-grandfather, Chalmers Lanier Glenn.
I've not found any other Brodnaxes in Rockingham County prior to when Robert's sons came of age in the 1850s (and they continued to live at the Cascades). Edward and Janet had no children of their own, and C.L. Glenn's children became Edward's heirs upon his death.
