I just found this item, rather old but i am intrigued by it.
William Smithson Brodhead was my maternal Grandmother's brother, Misses I & N were his sisters Ivy and Nelly and that of course was their address in Shefield at the time.
He was always refered to as Uncle Will by my mther and her family and the story goes he moved to to the Southern States and eaned his crust by painting commissions from the owners of sucessful racehorses. In Hoofprints over America opening page he is the artist sketching.
As recorded he moved to the States and I believe he married and divorced (possibly before the last war)but that is all I know.
I was also led to believe he added the 'Smithson' to his name to make hiself either sound more English (or American) as having two names was the fashion then. The Smithson was from Alice Smithson one of his maternal ancestors - and mine I supose. That may be another line of research.
In the First war he served in 'King Edwards Horse' which were a mounted unit.I have a scanned in photograph of his Troop whilst in England which I will hapily e-mail if you can let me have you e-mail address.
Kindest regards.
Stuart
