I have been trying to find a connection to the Broadfoot family in my line.
My gr-grandmother had a brother named George Broadfoot. He was born in Cumnock, Ayrshire, about 1847. His mother was Mary Smith, his father unkown, but definitely a Broadfoot.
My gr-grandmother was Jane Darroch, her mother Mary Smith, father James Darroch.
There was another sister Janet Smith, daughter of Mary Smith.
Also another brother, James Hamilton, son of Mary Smith and father unkown.
Apparently Mary had all these children with different men, so it has been hard to track them all down.I would very much like to find who the fathers of James and George were.
Please let me know if George matches with any of your Broadfoots.
I know the grandparents of George Broadfoot were David Smith and Mary Houston of Cumnock.
You wanted a good excuse for those who left Scotland for North America. Well,Jane and her husband came to Canada as he was offered a job as head gardener for a wealthy family here and I suppose thought that was the right move to make.
I am assuming that George Broadfoot stayed in Scotland as I have never heard of any of my gr-grandmother's family coming here.
