There are 3 DNA tests now:
1. Y-DNA is male only and follows the surname. Most projects have used this.
2. mt-DNA follows the all female line back - most matches are before genealogy records, surnames chage with each generation, there are few projects for these lines - so hard to use for genealogy, except to test specific relationships
3. at-DNA (Family Finder or FF) tests across all of your DNA (except Y and mt), can be taken by anyone, looks at 700,000 places and your result is a list of people (with emails) that are highly probable cousins from any of your ancestors. I'm up to 23 new cousins from this test - most are 6th to 10th, the path from me to the 23 different common ancestors passes through over 150 of my ancestors - through 14 of my 16 grgrgrandparents! Send me an email for the cost, but think about 6 tanks of gas. See www.familytreedna.com for more info - look at the FAQ tab, or email me direct: jim4bartletts@verizon.net
