Britton's Neck... Francis and Stephen Britton 1700's
Posted by: Jethro Lilley (ID *****1775) Date: February 22, 2009 at 14:58:14
  of 2308

Francis Britton was at the confluence of the Great and Little Pee Dee Rivers by 6/17/1697, when he a land warrant for 200 acres, and on 5/18/1702 he received a grant for an additional 200 acres. He died intestate and was buried in Christ Church Parish on 7/14/1731. His children are identified through wills and land transactions as John, Phillip, Timothy, Daniel, Moses, Francis,Joseph, Hannah, Mary, Martha and Sarah. No Stephen is mentioned anywhere, and no grandchildren that I could find are named Stephen.
My 6th g-grandfather Thomas Mims married Grace Britton, d/o Stephen Britton(b.1685)and Mary Livingston,in New Kent Co, Va. in 1727, and by 1753 they were in Bladen Co, NC, just across the border from SC. There is a sale of 300 acres from Joseph and Stephen Britton of Bladen to Josiah Wilson af same on 5/23/1772, and Moses Britton witnessed a sale of several tracts at once from Stephen Britton of Marion Dist. to Thomas Mims,Sr.of NC dated 3/14/1800,included were 450 acres in Marion on the Pee Dee, a 200a tract, a71 a. tract, 482 ac (grant to Stephen Britton) and 365 ac (grant to Stephen Britton), all for only 20 pounds currency. Obviously a "gift".
This Stephen Britton is not Grace Britton Mims father, as he would have been 115 years old. Possibly a brother.
What was the relationship between Francis of 1697 and the Stephen of the land grants? I find nothing in the pre-1770's in Marion, not even the mentioned grants to Stephen.
Brick Wall.
Any help appreciated... Jethro
