I have been trying to identify when, who, how, etc. William Brittingham arrived in the Colonies. Included in my research, all secondary I might add, were reviewing books on migration, passenger lists, and land grants. Thus far, I have read the following books and I still can't answer my questions. In Stratton Nottingham's book, "Certificates & Rights Accomack County, Va. 1633-1709, he lists William Brittingham as a part of head rights granted to Charles Ratcliffe. Nottingham suggests that Brittingham arrived before 1663. Ratcliffe was granted 400 a. in March 1663/4 for 8 individuals, 50 a. per person, including William Brittingham. George Cabell Greer's book, "Early Virginia Immigrants, 1623-1666, does not have a Brittingham , but does have a Charles Ratcliff, 1650, transported by a Stephen Charlton, of Northhampton, Co. In JoAnn Riley Mckey's book, "Accomack County, Virginia Court Order Abstracts, 1663-1666, Vol. 1, mirrors Nottingham's book in that she lists Charles Ratcliffe for 400 Acres and the names of those transported-which are the same as Nottingham's. Her source was from microfilms of the original handwritten documents in the Richmond Virginia Library. Gus Skordas used as his source the records found in Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland. His book, "The Early Settlers of Maryland,an Index to Names of Immigrants Compiled from Records of Land Patents, 1633-1680...." reported that William Brittingham was transported in 1659 (Liber 4, folio 204) and again in 1663 (Liber 6, folio 134). Again in the "Passenger and Immigration List Index, by editors P William Felby and Mary K. Meyer lists William Brittingham twice. Their source was Gus Skordas. I realize that there is a lot of misinterpretations, errors in reading handwritten documents, variations of surname spelling, etc. but it seems that only Skordas has identified the original documents(i.e. Liber and folio). Perhaps these documents list the name of the captain, ship, ports of departure, arrival, dates, etc. Perhaps he left them out because his objective was to name the individuals without listing of information. Has anyone reviewed the actual documents listed by Skordas? If so, did the documents provide some clue as to the ship's name, captain's name, etc.? Thanks for any help. Bill Brittingham, Jr.
