Hello Gary,

I also have a bunch of deeds from John and supposedly his sons. John was probably born closer to 1660 than 1670, for in 1684 he patented land in Surry County, which he later abandoned. To patent land he had to have been at least 21 years old, so 1663 is the latest John could have been born.

Both Hertford, NC and Northampton NC were formed from Bertie. John (known as John the Blacksmith in his native Isle of Wight county, VA.) owed land in Bertie in what would become Hertford and Northampton (as well as land in Isle of Wight, in Upper Parish, as well as Lower Parish-that part of Isle of Wight that became Southampton County, Va. in 1749).

According to Bertie court records, Suzanna Bressie Britt qualified as executor of the will in 1738.

Early 1741, Northampton County was formed from Bertie.

Feb. 1741, in a Northampton Deed, Thomas Brett refers to the land left to him by the last will of his father John Britt.

Oct. 1741 and Sept. 1761, in Northampton Deeds, Joseph Brett refers to the land left him by the last will of his father John Brett in a couple of deeds.

Oct. 1741 and Nov. 1751, in Northampton Deeds, Nathan Brett refers to the land left him by the last will of his father John Brett.

Sept. 1745 in an Isle of Wight deed, John Britt refers to the land left to him by his Grand Father John Britt in his last will.

Mar and Aug 1752, Benjamin Britt in Northampton Deeds, Benjamin Britt refers to the land left him by the last will of his father John.

There are all kinds of references to the will of John Britt/Brett, but I do not know what the will actually says. Are Joseph, Nathan, Thomas and Benjamin the only sons named? Is John the only grandson named?

Starting about 1740-1750 there seems to be an explosion of male Britts/Bretts in Southampton County Va. and the surrounding counties of Isle of Wight, Va., Brunswick/Greenville, VA., Hertford and Northampton Counties NC. I am trying, without much success, to sort them all out. I can not help but think the missing will would help a great deal.

Thanks a bunch,

Joe H. Drake
Southampton County, Virginia
