Maryville Times (Blount Co. TN) Monday, February 27, 1933:

"Obituary---Sarah Jane Russell was born, the exact date unknown and departed this life February 1, 1933 at 1:15 a.m. at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. James A. Teffeteller.

On November 29, 1860, she was married to William Russell, who departed this life June 15, 1911. To this union was born four children, one boy and three girls, two are still living, James E. Russell of Tennessee and Mrs. Ann Turley of Freewater, Oregon, and the two have passed on are Mrs. Mary Ferguson and Mrs. Elizabeth Murr.

Grandmother Russell professed faith in Christ at an early age and later united with the Old Piney Grove Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful Christian until her death.

Grandmother Russell was among the oldest mothers of Tennessee. She enjoyed good health until a few years ago. God watched over and kept Grandmother to a ripe old age, for some mission we know not what and when her time had come to bid farewell to this life, she was granted a sweet and peaceful hour in which to die.

She leaves to mourn her going 33 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, a host of friends and loved ones. Rev. L.S. Carnes officiated at the funeral and Grandmother was laid to rest in Old Piney Grove Cemetery beside her husband.

With the passing of Grandmother Russell, Blount County has lost one of its oldest mothers, one who kept the home fires burning, planted and reaped for her little ones while the husband and father marched bravely on, enduring the toils and hardships of the Civil War that the Stars and Stripes might fly over our nation’s capitol today.

On December 13, 1862, with her tiny babe beside her, she saw her husband marched away by the Confederate Army as a prisoner of war. He was held for some time. Escaping, he made his way into Kentucky, where the Federal troops were stationed. With the thought of the loved ones behind he suffered and fought for the nation’s cause, until the close of the war.

Grandmother Russell was a living history. She was blessed with a good memory until a few years ago, when age dulled her mind to some extent. But the last few months of her life God renewed her memory and she talked and told of happenings of 75 years ago and before. She seemed to live over her childhood days again and many, many interesting stories she could tell of life before the Civil War and after its close. She knew much of the Indians and life as it was a century ago. She remembered well the "falling of the stars" on Nov. 6, 1833. She said she was but a small girl at the time and she never knew her exact age. Having been born in the day and age when dates were not kept as they are today. Her age she told was recorded in the family Bible and once when moving it was lost. A heavy rain fell before it was found and made it impossible to read the dates. With all her store of historical knowledge, the hardships of her life and the brave and noble deeds, we know she did, never once would she allow honor or praise to be bestowed upon her.

She loved, honored and served the Maker and Giver of all good gifts and it is to Him the honor is due for the loyal and honest life of Grandmother Russell.

Grandmother before her marriage was Sarah Jane Britt.

By one who knew and loved her."
