I have the genealogy of your Briscoe line back to William the Conqueror. I have copies of many old lineage charts and Bible records, deeds, wills and letters but no portraits. A portrait of Dr. John Briscoe I who came to Maryland by invitation from Lord Baltimore once hung over the fireplace at Piedmont Plantation near Charlestown, West Virginia. I recall several other portraits but I am not positive whose they were. The last Briscoe to own Piedmont, Miss Louise Briscoe, died in 1979 and left the house and furnishings to the local Historical Society. It was my understanding at the time that many of the items, such as the original letter from Lord Baltimore inviting Dr. John to join the "Ark" and "Dove" expedition, and the portraits were intrusted to their care. Miss Louise was a great lady and would be very disappointed to know that Piedmont was sold. I understand it was just too expensive for the Historical Society to keep up. Two years ago, "CBS Sunday Morning" did a wonderful piece on your line of Briscoes. It was a story about a reunion at Sotterley Plantation in Maryland between the descendants of John Hanson Briscoe and the descendants of the slaves owned by the Briscoes. A descendant named Judge John Hanson Briscoe was interviewed. The information I have on your line states:
1. Dr. John Briscoe of the "Ark" and the "Dove" m. Elizabeth Du Bois
2. Col. Philip Briscoe m. Susannah Swann
3. Captain John Briscoe m. Elanor Williamson
4. Philip Briscoe married F. Chloe Hanson daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Hanson. Chloe's brother was John Hanson who was the President of the Continental Congress. Chloe Hanson was alive August 2, 1755 when she joined her husband in a deed conveying certain land. Philip Briscoe was commissioned by his excellency a member of Lord Balimore's Honorable Council for Charles County. He served in the Revolutionary War enlisting on May 3, 1778 and being discahrged on April 3, 1779. Philip's estates were Mitcham Hills, Capuco Manor and Harrow Hills. Philip and Chloe had 4 children: Dr. John Hanson Briscoe m. Elizabeth Ottoway Bond, Sanuel Hanson Briscoe, Hanson Briscoe m. Mary Ann Jordan, Elizabeth Briscoe m. Barnett White Barber.
