I've been to Carlyle Castle (the county seat & records archive) and looked into the history of the Briscoes of that area. They appear to have come from German descent during the Crusades when they were imported as mercenaries. The Name Brisk was suggested to be derived from a german variant of "birch" which could have represented the birch staffs of their spears or to have ment "side of hill".
The Briscoe's settled on the Scottish boarder and married into the population.
Crofton Manor is one of 8 barronial estates owned by the Briscoes in that area. The house was demolished during WW2 for re-use of its bricks, but the deer yard and barn still stand and are used as teaching parks.
There are a number of Briscoe's buried in the church of the town nearest Crofton Manor. Dates range back to the 13th century.
