In the 1850 census for Putnam Co Ortho Briscoe, 46, and wife Sarah Bird Briscoe, 48, have children: Mary E., 20; Margaret, 22; Marha, 18; William, 15; Noah, 13; Nancy, 11; and Wiatt, 9. A Silly Bricoe, 40, is living with the family (a sister of Ortho's?)
About the youngest child -- Wiatt Briscoe married Santilla L. Cyrus, daughter of James S. and Margaret Young Cyrus, at her father's home in Putnam Co VA on Feb. 26 1863. The marriage was performed by the Rev. John V. Young, a Methodist minister who was the bride's uncle and a captain in the Civil War. Wiatt died the 24th of July 1864 fighting for the Union Army. His widow left a will and was deceased by March 15 1865, dying probably of comsumption. Her grandparents were Elijah Cyrus and Mary Ann Wiatt Cyrus. On Mary Ann's death record, it says her parent was a Frances Wiatt. I found a marriage record for a Frances Wiatt to a Hugh Paul in Greenbrier Co VA in 1804. Mary Ann Wiatt was born in 1802. Did her widowed mother marry Hugh Paul? Does anyone know how the Wiatt family connects to Briscoe? Was Wiatt Briscoe named for the Wiatt's?
