Dear John,
My great great grandfather James Briody came to England and married Martha Pittam in Northampton in 1854. His father Connor Briody was described as a farmer on their marriage certificate. Census records indicate that James was born c1834 in Oldcastle, County Meath. Oral history has it that he came from Castletown. He died in Northampton on 18 December 1911.
Since Oldcastle Poor Law Union covered both Meath and Cavan, I have been searching for Connor Briody in both counties.
There are 2 records of a Connor Briody having children in Meath about the time that James was born. A Conor Briody with wife Bridget Curn had a Peter baptised 2 July 1838 at Kilbride, Mountnugent.
Also a Connor Briody with wife Christine Monaghanhad a Catherine baptised 13 October 1839 also at Kilbride, Mountnugent. Catherine Briody married John Fitzpatrick and had children in Kilnaleck.
In the 1821 Cavan Census, there is a Connor Briody, a farmer aged 40 with wife Margaret and children John, Pat and Catherine at Mullaghoran in Drumlummon. In 1824 a Connor Briody had a Tax Assessment in Clonloaghan, Drumlummon.
There are also 2 marriage records where the bride's father is listed as Connor Briody. Anne Briody married James Strong in 1855 in Drumlummon. She died in 1896 but James and their children are in the 1901 census at Shankill, Ballymachugh, Cavan. Their children were born in Kilnaleck.
So there was a Connor Briody from Drumlummon whose descendants are in Kilnaleck. Since the Briody farm in your post is in Kilnaleck and called Drumloman, I wondered if we could be related?
Also a Bridget Briody married John Meretty/Merity in 1864. They had a son in 1865 in Kilnaleck before she died the same year and John went on to remarry.
Oral history also indicates that my James Briody had a brother who was a Catholic Priest in Ireland and that he rose up in the ranks to become a Canon.
Does any of this ring a bell with you?
I would be really interested to hear what you know about your family. Do you know their names going back four generations?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
