I knew of a couple of Squire - Brinsmead marriages, but have not been able to place a direct connection. Certainly the Squires and the Brinsmeads lived right next to each other in St. Giles in the Woods, Devon for several generations, and I have a lot of information on the Squire family. St. Giles in the Woods is just south of Bideford and Barnstable - in fact I was in all three places just this summer.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission shows the death of John Brinsmead Squire on Dec 24th, 1918 at age 35, son of Ephraim Squire. Is this your Jack?

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that you are descended from Harriet Brinsmead, born 1822 the daughter of Thomas Brinsmead and Margery Squire. Harriet married another Squire in Bideford in 1843. I do not have a direct record of the marriage at hand, so I cannot give you her husband's first name. However, it would explain your "mostly Squire" reference since she had a Squire for a mother and a husband.

I would be very interested in learning more about your family - forwards and backwards. I have some research on the Web - www.simsgroup.com/Brinsmead - that might interest you. Particularly look at the pages on John Brinsmead the piano maker (a nephew of Thomas and Margery), and on West Country roots. Also check the link to Doug Beverage' site. I would very much like to see copies of your mother's pictures if you have any way to make copies. I can give you hordes of information on the piano makers if you are interested, as well as lots of information on St. Giles in the Woods and Weare Giffard, the two villages were the Brinsmeads and the Squires lived. I have the family traced back to 1620 in Devon and am trying to push back a little further to where I believe they originated near Taunton in Somerset. The Brinsmade's that spawned the US line come from this area of Somerset.
