Debbie, my brother bill has asked me to answer your query - what of it I can, that is. Rhoda started life as Rhoda Smith, daughter of William Smith. She married Theophilus Scarrott in 1862 and had my gt grandmother Conceletta in 1863 (Conceletta went on to marry Walter Brinkley, nephew of the Valentine that Rhoda is with in 1881) With Theo she had Counsey, William,Frederick and possibly a daughter Rhoda. Then she went with Valentine Brinkley and had Valentine, Edward and James. After Valentine snr death she then paired up with her (possibly) cousin Christopher Smith, but had no further children. 1891 census Woodford Essex RG12 1359/39 Walpole Road Caravan Christopher Smith hd m 56 Chari Caner Digswell Herts Rhoda Smith wife m 43 Waterfield Warks Edward Smith s un 11 James Smith s un 13 This Edward and James are Rhodas children,Edward is Valentines but Im not sure who the father of James is ( could possibly be Theo or Valentine) Take no notice of where Rhoda says she is born, on every census its different. So your James Brinkley becomes James Smith, and I believe he may use either name as an adult. I dont have any more info on James im afraid. But I did manage to get on the 1901 census on that first day online and just had enough time to find Rhoda on it - shes in Ilford Essex, but I didnt get chance to find out who was with her. My old aunt Mary told me that her grandmother Counsey did have brothers Valentine and Edward (she didnt mention James but had suffered a stroke when she told me this and couldnt speak properly) So its likely that they might have travelled together. Its worth looking for James and Edward on the 1901 with Rhoda if you get a chance. I expect Counsey and Walter Brinkley were there also, because my grandparents got married in Ilford in 1901 in May, weeks after they first met. Hope this may be of some help Elizabeth Golding from Kent Notify Administrator about this message?
