Ephraim's parents were James and Elnatha Oakley Brinkley, from Persons County, NC. Ephraim had two brothers, Wiley P. and James Curtis Brinkley. The entire family moved to Kentucky just after the Civil War. Ephraim and James C. stayed there while Wiley P. moved on to Missouri in 1880 or so.

I have found information that indicates that James SR. was the son of Eli Brinkley, the son of James.
