William H. and Jefferson Davis Brinkley

I'm looking for information on my great, great grandfather William H. Brinkley born abt. 1835 in Coffeeville, Yalobusha Co., MS.
He married Martha Price and had two sons Jefferson and Joseph. One side of the the family states that after the Civil War, William had his things sent to his family in MS informing them that he was dead. From there he started a new life in ARK. The other side says that he was captured during the War and after release made it as far as Memphis, TN where he died and was buried. Is anyone related to this William? Can you verifiy the story?
