To verify facts - I too am stumped with Morgan Brinker of whom I am a descendant. It is in my attempt to locate and verify his parentage that I have worked to look at the names of all Brinkers located in Decatur County IN. (an unusual name for that area at that time period) One reason that I feel the James M Brinker age 26 in the 1850 census is a brother toMorgan Brinker is because Morgan has a child named James M - a possible indication of a naming of after a brother.
It is interesting to note that the Bartholomew County IN government has a website with which one can search the archives.
http://www.bartholomewco.com/archives/archives-index.htmlhttp://www.bartholomewco.com/archives/archives-index.html
I have done so and got copies of the Ruanna Brinker and Payton / Paton documents.
The items that follow are my field notes for Morgan Brinker and family - they are gleanings from postings etc so are somewhat redundant to what appears already on the internet:

Donna,
Have you checked with Brenda about the Brinkers? I know we must be connected. I'm not sure that your Morgan is the same as mine. He was probably married twice. My Morgan is James Morgan b) 1845 in Indiana.Married Nancy Williams. Had Laborn,Mary, James Morgan, Luranna, Lillie, Margaret, (Riley and Noah I'm told). Then Laborn had a child named "Janey". I will try to research back and see what I can find.
Ruth
DONNA,
I don't know if any family members have given you the following information. If so disregard. Also , Ruanna was not married to Bob Doniphan. It was William Robert (Bob) Richmond who was known to be in Doniphan , Missouri.

May have gotten a break on Morgan's family. I found a Mary Jane Brinker b.1820 from Henry Co. Ky married to a William Nathaniel Gist. They had a daughter marry Joseph Henry Gist. If you check out the Gist message board it talks about Gist going to Indiana. And in Henry Co. Ky there is a Joseph Brinker could be Morgan's father.Let me know what you think. Sharon
Message should read, Mary Jane Brinker Gist's daughter Mary M. Gist married Joseph Henry Bryan
Maybe someone can help me. I am looking for info on the Brinkers. My grandmother was Gertrude May Brinker born in 1881 in Indiana. In her bible were a few names & dates. and a lock of black hair which belonged to Bessie Lee Pence and that she was buried in Pocahantas Ark. also is a picture of Noah holding a big catfish, J.M.Brinker born 1845 married N.J.Williams born 1846. James M Brinker died 1901. N.J.Brinker died 1894.My grandmother Gertrude May married Alexander Shelton they lived in Ind. and then Mo. and later moved to Clarenden and then moved to Ca.If anyone can help me I would be grateful. The only info about her is what I found in the bible.I also found tin type pictures but have no idea who they are. A card with Morgan Brinker photoghrapher is with these pictures. thanks for any help anyone can provide. Sincerely Barbara Massey
I have been looking for some one who knew Gertrude besides my Daddy. She is listed on my Stepgrandfather's funeral notice and none of the younger Brinker family knew of her. Please contact me at [email protected] and I can connect you with Gertrude's brother's and sister's family.
Brenda
Dear Brenda, thank you so much. I am trying to put together a family tree recently. All I had were a few names and not much to go on. When I saw the name Bessie Lee Pence I remembered the curl of black hair in grandma's bible and I do remember Noah who came to her house and stayed for a while then left.My email address is [email protected]. I am really excited.Maybe now I can find out something. thanks again, Barbara Massey
Barbara,
Hello, I am the great-grandaughter of Elza Brinker brother of Gertrude, Ruanna, James Morgan, etc.
Did you get on to the two family sites? I tried to email you last week but it came back to me. Could you email me at [email protected] and we can chat? I am so happy to hear from another family member.
Ruth
Brenda,
I couldn't quite follow your genealogy. Maybe I read it too fast. The Bessie who married a Pence was my dad's aunt Bessie Brinker. They both died in California. That information is in the genealogy with my sister also. Bessie had papers that showed land that my dad and his sister Ruth were supposed to receive ,enherit.I have been trying to locate family to procure those documents if still in existence.
Sorry for the awful typing. I'm doing it in the dark it is 2:10 in the morning.
Please write if you'd like. Love to hear from you.
Again
Ruth
Hi I'm Ruanna's GGranddaughter. I got a e-mail from Brenda showing me the info. you sent her. Would like to hear from you and hear all the info. you have on Ruanna. Do you know where she is buried. Please let me hear from you. I am having problems with my e-mail for some reason so I hope you get this.
In a message I recieved from Brenda , she states Ruanna died in Poplar Bluff, Missouri in 1955. I have no information as to her death. If you have the last name she had at her death , I will be glad to see if I can find her in social security death index. Do you have Broderbunds World Family Tree?
Please keep in touch and tell me all you can about Ruanna and lineage. I e-mailed you. If you don't get it let me know here ok?
My dad was the son of James William Brinker who was the son of Laban Elza Brinker, who was the brother of Ruanna. My dad was James Albert Brinker and my maiden name is Ruth Ann Brinker.

some additional information on Rachel(Brinker) Welcher. Rachel Brinker was the widow of Charles Brinker, and she married Josiah Welcher on April 28, 1848 in Decatur Co. In, The Brinker children in the household would be Charles Brinker's children, The Welcher Children would be her step-children.
Thanks Patty,
I believe Charles Brinker is the father of Morgan, James, Charles, Lidia, William, and Catharine. There is also a Matilda Brinker who married in Decatur Co. in 1845 that may be his child also.
The 1830 census shows Charles has 2 sons and 3 daughters
The 1840 census shows Charles has 3 sons and 5 daughters.
I also believe Charles is the son of Joseph Brinker who is in Henry Co. Ky, 1810 -1840, but have not verified this.

I was not sure if my other post went through so I'm going over it again. Thank you for the information. I think that your Morgan may be related in some way to our Charles Brinker, because I do believe that the Lidia in their household is probably related.
Our William Brinker's death certificate says his father was born in Ky. while census records state Va. so this is confusing also.
I am also not sure of Charles Brinkers wife's maiden name. Will's death certificate says his mothers name was Rachel, but the last name is hard to read. I could be Bowen, Burns, Bruens, Burens,Burus, the letters are not written clearly. There was a William Bowen who helped settle the estate, and I thought it likely, but not for sure. Patty Carson

Morgan Brinker married Ruanna (Rowana) Crusick (Cusick) on 13 April 1843 in Decatur County, Indiana.
They had the following children: Lidia A., Francis A., James M. in the 1850 Jackson Township, Decatur County, Indiana Census.
By 1860, Ruanna was living in the household of John W. and Catherine Decker in Saluda Township, Jefferson County, Indiana with daughter Mary M. and two additional Brinker children Hulda and William H.. (I've later identified Hulda and William H. as the children of Morgan Brinker also).
William was listed as 2 years of age in the 1860 Census taken on 15 June 1860. To me, this means that Ruanna either divorced (if there were divorced back then) Morgan or he died sometime around 1857-1858.
By 29 September 1860, Ruanna (Rowana) had married a John Burch in Jefferson County, Indiana.

Erin I think I may have found a connection with the Brinkers and the Bryan. In Henry Co. Ky. A Mary Jane Brinker married a William Nathaiel Gist their daughter Mary M. married a Joseph Henry Bryan b.1832. I think Mary Jane Brinker is my Morgan Brinker's sister. And the only other Brinker in Henry Co. Ky is a Joseph Brinker could be their father.Needs alot of work but I will stay on it. Did you check out post #35 Thanks for the lead. Sharon

Isn't tracing family fun! I wonder if the Brinkers and the Bryans remained close year after year? When do you suspect your Brinkers of coming to the US? The Bryans came in 1653-it is possiblethat they brought a relative of Sarahs with them, thus bringing the name Brinker to the US. What a long shot LOL. I will keep you posted on anything I find!

I HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE - this is literally field notes - but I use these to "dig".
An interesting note...notice that on the 1880 census of Ruanna Crusick Brinker Burch - son William notes that hewas born in IN - his father in VIRGINIA (not Kentucky as noted on 1850 census for Morgan) and his mother in IN. hmmm... the Virginia thing opens up an entire new area.
According to Proquest/Heritage Quest's online census the earliest Brinker (spelled exactly as is - no Brinkerhoff or Brinkerman) is a Joseph Brinker in Henry County KY (1810).
Please contact me as it is late and I have a regular job to support my genealogy habit....I look forward to unraveling this mystery of ours.
