The Brimberry name has been spelled several different ways through the years with colonial records showing Brunberg, Brynberg, Brinberg, Branberry and Brumberry. It is said that the Swedish meaning is "brown mountain". Christiern Brunberg was born in the Swedish province of Halland cs. 1684 and was 30 years old when he arrived in New Sweden, now Wilmington, DE. He gained a position of prominence in the affairs of the Old Swedes Church and it is said he was a learned man who could read and write, he carried with him from Sweden a signature ring with which he marked his signature on his will. On 2 Jul 1719, Christiern married Maria Peterson, daughter of Mathias Peterson and Elizabeth Justis and the grand-daughter of Samuel Peterson one of the first Swedish colonists. Maria's mother later married Edward Robinson, who also belonged to Old Swedes Church. Maria had two brothers, Samuel and Mathias and one sister Breta who married to Andrew Justison. Breta and Andrew's daughter, Catharina married Thomas Willing the founder of Wilmington. The children of Christian Brinberg b. 1684, d. 1752 and Maria Peterson b. 1699, d. 1750, were all born in Delaware. They are as follows: Elizabeth, b. 1719, d. 1720. Swithin, b. 1720, d. 1791 in DE Peter, b. 1722, d. ca. 1764 in NJ Susanna, b. 1724, d. ? Mathew, b. 1726, d. 1730 DE John , b. 1730, d. 1730 DE Mary, b. 1734, d. ? Mathias, b. 1734, d. ca. 1810 in KY Christiana, b.1738, d. 1752 in DE Elizabeth, b. 1740, d. ? Mathias above and his wife Mary Anderson were the only ones to have male heirs to carry on the Brimberry name. They had seven sons and it is said that the sons all carried the middle name of Anderson making tracing them easier. The above is exerpts of research done by Marion E. Brimberry. Oneita Brimberry
