Please read through to the end to see the problem: I descend from Robert Shepard b. ca. 1740 and died in Goochland Co., VA about 1796. His son Samuel married Jane "Jennie" Guill. Others in the Guill and Brightwell & Shepard families intermarried. Add to that the Thaxton family and Ligons. The Douglas Register lists Robert Shepard and Elizabeth Blackstone as the parents of Samuel and other of the siblings. In one place the wife's surname is listed as Baxter. I am coming to believe that Elizabeth B. Shepard, wife of Robert, was a Brightwell after all. A son of Samuel's, William Shepard, married Jane Price Brightwell. It is reported that they had a daughter named Elizabeth Blackstone Shepard, 1816 who lived only a year. No source. The Blackstone name is so very rare and I see no evidence of them in early Goochland County, or Prince Edward. Do any of you doing research on the earliest Brightwells in Virginia show a place for an Elizabeth Brightwell, b. ca. 1740?, who could have married my Robert Shepard?
