After searching for confirmation that Mark Brighton rose to such a high office, I found this in "The History of Clay County, Indiana" by William Travis, vol. 1, copyright 1909, page 224: "Mark R. Brighton, a native of Clay county, son of Alexander and Carrie (Rizley) Brighton, born at Bowling Green, where he attended the public schools, and later the Brazil schools, while yet a very young man, through the recommendation and influence of Senator Daniel W. Voorhees, and the assistance of his uncle, John E. Rizley, of New York, procured a desireable position with the government survey, with headquarters at the national capital, as much or more than twenty years ago." AND on page 214: "John E. Risley, a native of Clay county....in the fall of 1863 went to New York, where he located in the practice of his adopted profession, and was deputy commissioner of internal revenue, New York, in 1869. In 1885, he was appointed minister to Denmark, by President Cleveland, which position he filled with credit to himself and honor to his country...".
