SAMUEL BRIGHAM 5, son of Joel 4 and Mary (Church) Brigham, born in Marlboro, Mass., 3 Dec., 1760; died 2 March., 1813; in Augusta, N. Y.; married Phebe DAVIS, (dau. of Daniel, a kinsman of Gov. John Davis), of Worcester, who married (2) Israel RICE, of Madison, N. Y.; she died 9 Feb., 1843, aged 82. He was a farmer, and moved, about 1796, to Madison, N. Y
Samuel the brother of Jonathan and John BRIGHAM, took up land at Chadwick's Bay (*Dunkirk NY) also then returned to Oneida Co NY where he died in 1811.
JOEL Brigham 6,born. 12 Sept., 1785 his eldest son ;and the only one to come to Chautauqua Co. NY, settled soon after his fathers death on the lot taken up by his father. A few years after, he went to Buffalo with Capt. PERKINS by lake, taking with him a wagon for sale, for which there was no need in this wooden county; He returned on foot; and when in the 4 mile woods, about a mile beyond Cattaraugus Creek, he heard the report of a gun, and felt a pain, similar to a "bee sting". On looking around, he spied a young Indian beside a tree, preparing to load his gun to fire again, but having broken his ramrod, he could not get the ball down. He shook his cane at the young redskin, and made some threats. He soon found he had been shot through the body; the ball having passed through the fold of the intestines and out in front, 2 inches from the navel. Beginning to feel intense pain, and becoming weak, he feared he could not reach the abode of a white man, and on a scrap of paper, wrote with a piece of lead, an explaination of his condition. He succeeded , however, in getting near Mack's ferry, where he was heard calling for assistance. He was carried to Mack's Tavern, where he was for several days deranged and unconscious. Surgeons from Buffalo attended him and he was confined for 2 or 3 months. On the return of consciousness he thought he could identify the offender. if brought into his presence. Mr. MACK had a number of Indians brought before BRIGHAM, who at once recognized the assassin, LONGFINGER, about 17 years of age. He was found guilty, and imprisoned in Buffalo jail, for 30 days. Though BRIGHAM lived many more years, his injuries are supposed to have hastened his death. He died in Ohio.
Joel married 8 Oct., 1809, Polly Ann, daughter of Benjamin and Susan DURKEE, of Augusta, N. Y.; born in Washington, Conn., 7 Oct., 1786; died in Lodi, 13 Sept., 1840. He was a Lieutenant in the War of 1812. He removed from Augusta, N. Y., to Dunkirk, N. Y., about 1816 and thence to Lodi in 1834.

i Elmina7, b. 2 July, 1810. died Dec., 1843; married 21 March, 1833, Rev. Joel Goodell, from Dunkirk, N. Y. to Lodi, O.; he died in Taber, Ia.; he married again after her death.
ii Dexter, b. 28 Oct., 1812.died in Lodi, O., 19 Aug., 1844; married 10 May, 1840, Deborah, daughter of Thomas Shaw; born in Plainfield, Mass.; she married (2) Abram Falconer and died at Wauseon, O., 27 June, 1893. He moved to Lodi, O. The male line is extinct.
iii Winfield Scott BRIGHAM, b. 30 Dec., 1814. died 17 April 1906, in Bowling Green, O.; married (1) 22 Sept., 1836, Mary E., daughter of James White of Sheridan, N. Y., who died 8 Feb., 1863; married (2) Susanna Falconer, who died 31 March, 1893.
He resided in Lodi, Chatham and Wauseon, O. Was a tailor by trade and had a large shop in Lodi, O., also a farm. He spent his last days with his son Joel. He was a perfect specimen of a man physically, very muscular and well built, and more than 6 feet tall.
iv Joel, b. 10 Jan., 1818 Dunkirk, Chautauqua Co NY first white child born in that place; married 29 Nov., 1838, Betsey, daughter of Elias Lyon of Chatham Centre, O.; born in Goshen, Mass., 20 Feb., 1820; died in Wauseon, O., 25 Nov., 1892, after 54 years of married life.
v Haven, b. 2 June, 1820; d. 19 Feb., 1837.
vi Theodore, b. 2 Jan., 1823; d. 19 Aug., 1835.
vii Julius, b. 25 Aug., 1826; d. 26 Jan., 1840.
