I have found some info since my first posting.Melvin changed his name to Brigham during or shortly after the Civil War probably due to a change of sides. He started as a Southern soldier, enlisting in 1862, then deserted to the North 9/10/1863.He was probably a little uncomfortable in Arkansas after serving with the Union, so he changed his name and eventually moved to Oklahoma. His father was William C. Brigance and his grandfather was William Brigance. It's funny that your Charles M. changed his name from Brigham to Brigance and my Melvin went the other way.
