I have a Solomon Briggs in my family - he is my great-great grandfather. His son, William Solomon Briggs was my great grandfather. I know very little about William - I have tried to do some research using old census records.
William was born in about 1863 in or around Afton, MN. In the 1880 Afton census - he is not listed - unless they got his name wrong - the listing is as follows:
Solomon J. Briggs (head) born about 1830(4). Married to Mary (Coggswell) from Ohio. Children listed:
Edwin (possibly my great grandfather)
George, Frank, Ernest, and three others I cannot read very well.
In an 1860 Green Lake, WI census - Solomon and Mary are listed - and the following children:
Esther (age 2) and Mary (5 months). The next farm over a James Cogswell is listed - I believe he is Mary's father - Solomon's father in law.
