Hi, I've been researching Briggs & have bumped into the Briggs in your question. My main source is an unpublished manuscript by Lilla Briggs Sampson about Nathaniel Briggs of Block Island, RI. {a copy is at the Wisconsin State Historical Library} I enclose my added comments in brackets like this: { } Here are the crucial pieces I've found: Sampson, p 27: "Family history states that Mr. {Reuben, who died in 1849} Briggs was of Connecticut and moved to Wyoming County, New York, in 1817 {part of Genesee Co until the 1840s} and took up one hundred acres of land. The petition for probating his will in Warsaw, Wyoming County, New York, gives his wife`s name as Betsey Briggs of Gainsville, Wyoming County, New York, and mentions the following: Reuben Briggs, Jr., of Gainesville, New York. {likely his son} Sabrina Nye, of Whetstone, Ohio. {near Bucyrus} Reuben Briggs, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. {likely at Rubicon, Dodge Co, WI in 1850} Uriah F. Briggs, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. {likely your Uriah} Benjamin Briggs, of Beestown, Wisconsin. {Beetown, in Grant Co} William H. Briggs, on way to California. John Briggs, of Gainesville, New York." Sampson assumes these were his children, but I think the the boys in WI are sons of the Uriah 1790-1823 below: USGenWeb.com link to Wyoming Co, NY has: this transcription for Briggs Cemetery, School Rd. BRIGGS URIAH FEB 21,1823 {stone} 36 33 YS BRIGGS JOHN MAR 3, 1891 {stone} 3 76YS BRIGGS POLLY WIFE OF JOHN APR 6, 1867 {stone} 3 55YS BRIGGS HATTIE S. WIFE JOHN MAY 11, 1888 stone} 3 54 YRS BRIGGS RUBIN MAR 29, 1849 {stone} 5 80 YRS SLADE BETSY BRIGGS APR 29, 1871 {stone} 6 92Y 6M, JOHN & RUBIN BRIGGS PLOT {Betsy seems to have re-married a Slade after Rubin died} B. P. 4 {stone #} BETWEEN {stones} 3 & 5 OF BRIGGS STONES {I have no clue to this} See also Linda Sherry`s post on this board of May 31, 2001 which has more probable family. I would like Amy to be the wife of the 1st Uriah Briggs. She fits in all ways...except Uriah #2 was born ca 1828, 5 years after the death of Uriah #1 in 1823. Possibly some of the dates are wrong. e.g. on a tombstone, a 3 & 8 are easily confused...so maybe Uriah #1 died in 1828? More "field work" investigation is needed.
