George,
My gr grandfather was John Edgar Briggs, son of Theodore B Briggs and Harriet Salisbury Briggs. John Edgar was married to Elizabeth North, descended from John North who founded Farmington, CT. Her parents were David Abbey North and Elizabeth Lay. My grandmother was Beulah Martha Briggs, m. Russell Purdy Merrick. My father was Robert Briggs Merrick. Family records show that "B" was for Bradley.
Here is John Edgar's obituary:
John Edgar Briggs, New York harbor captain more than 50 years died yesterday at the age of 71 in the Marine Hospital at Stapleton, S.I. Until he went to the hospital several months ago, he lived with his wife at 66 North Grove Street, East Orange. Mr. Briggs served as a captain in the Spanish American War and as a lieutenant commander in the transport service during the World War. He became a captain for the Hoboken Ferry Co. May 1, 1886, and continued in the service of that organization after it became a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Railroad. Subsequently he was made a steam lighterage captain for the railroad and served as port captain in 1909 and also from 1918 to 1931. He was retired last August 31. Mr. Briggs leaves his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth North Briggs; a daughter (Beulah) Mrs. Russell Purdy Merrick of 363 Beech Spring Road, South Orange, with whom Mrs. Briggs makes her home; a brother Frank Briggs, and a sister Mrs. Harriet B. Sleicher.

I have in my notes, Carlton, 1876-1898, died Spanish-American War on Steamer Lawrence. Theodore died at age 56.

Funeral services for Theodore B. Briggs, well-known Hoboken marine engineer and consulting engineer for the firm of Goodwin & Gallagher of new York City, who died at his house, 915 Washington Street on tuesday, will be held tonight at 8 o'clock at the funeral prlors of Ivins D. Applegate, 225 Washington Avenue. Mr. Briggs, who was 56 years of age, had been a resident of Hoboken for forty-five years and durng the Spanish-American War was chief engineer of the steamer Lawrence, on which his borther, Carlton, was his assistant. Carlton died as the result of injuries received during the war. AT the time of the Black Tom explosion in Jersey City during the World War, the deceased was chief engineer of the steamer Gallaghey which was lying at Black Tom, and he saved the lives of many men during the catastrophe. He comes from a family of boatmen. His father was catain of a river boat and for thirty years was in the service of the Hoboken Ferry Company. His brother, Captain John Briggs, has been with the Lackawanna marine department and another brother, Frank, also a marine engineer. The deceased was born in Athens, NY, and is survived by his wife, Anna; one son, Arthur; a daughter Mrs. Charles kovel, and his two brothers and a sister, Mrs. Harriet Sleicher. He was a memeber of the Junior Order United American Mechanics, Council No. 169 of Hoboken. Internment will be tomorrow in Hoboken Cemetery.
