Kevin, thanks for posting on Brigance Family Gen. Forum. You indicate your Melvin L. was born in Lawrenceburg, TN. There is documentation his father, William C., lived in Carroll Co., TN in the 1820's and 1830's prior to moving to Pope Co., AR. I have always assumed you Melvin L. was born in Carroll Co., TN. I have never seen any records suggesting the name change from Brigance to Brigham came about prior to the Civil War (1860's). I believe the name change related to events and happening during the Civil War and the following years. The military records I have on Melvin L. suggest he first enlisted in the Union (1862). Then there is entry in the record of "Deserted to the enemy 9/10/1863." I also suspect the AR records for Lafayette M. Brigance was for you Melvin L. and perhaps relates to a "change in idenity" during the Civil War. As you may know, Melvin L.'s obituray indicates "Soldier in the northern army." Some who had served with the Union found living in the Pope Co., AR area rather uncomfortable following the Civil War. Some of Melvin L.'s brother had served in the Confederate (one killed). Thus, I suspect the name change and the move to the Indian Territory (away from family members) relates to the "division during the Civil War" and later hostility. As you probably know, this is typical of what happened in many families. It was such a difficult and confusing period, I find it hard to fault anyone for what happened. Your Brigance line descends from the William Brigance who died in Sumner Co. TN in 1804. William was Melvin L.'s grandfather. This genealogy is published in Volume 2 of the Brigance Genealogy. If you are interested in this publication, visit website www.brigance.net. Am I correct that you are the son of Robert Marvin and Alta June (Upchurch) Burton and the brother of Robert, James and Cheryl? Let me know if you are interested in exchanging information on the descendants of Melvin L. If you will forward what information you have on his descendants, I will integrate it with my information and provide you with a copy of the same.
