Thanks Thomas.

It turns out that I have solved my mystery (well, sort of solved). I found the book by Worth S. Ray, “The Lost Tribes of North Carolina, Part IV. Old Albemarle and Its Absentee Landlords,” 1947, Reprinted for the Clearfield Co., Inc., The Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, MD, 1993." The passage you quoted from Edison's book appears to be based on what Ray wrote about the Thomas family (he devotes 13 pages to the family in his 160-page book).

I also had an email today from Edison H. Thomas himself. He said that he doesn't research anymore because of poor vision, but he referred me to the Worth Ray book and said that he had used it in writing his own book about the Thomas and Bridges families.

I posted a detailed report today on the Thomas Genforum site (message 16817). The bottom line is that Worth Ray made a mistake and Edison seems to have followed it. The Josiah Thomas (1770-1830) who married Tabitha Hunt and lived in Franklin Co NC was not the Josiah Thomas who was mentioned as a grandson of John Blakemore Sr. in his 1789 Bertie Co NC will, and Josiah Thomas Sr., the husband of Sarah Bazemore, was not his mother. The key evidence is that both Josiah Thomas Sr. and his two sons Josiah Thomas Jr. and Jordan Thomas are enumerated in the 1810 census of Bertie Co NC, at the same time that Josiah Thomas (1770-1830) is enumerated in Franklin Co NC. For complete information, please refer to my Thomas Genforum post, referred to above.
