Dear Olin,
Have not been able to locate this Nancy Bridger yet... Will keep looking... However, came accidentally across this note:
"On March 25, 1839 at the home of David Lang on the South Ferry, about 30 miles form St. Mary's a party of Indians rushed into the house and killed John A. O'Steen whiled seated at supper. Mr. Lang's son, a mere lad, firing on the party who entered the house, repelled the raiding party. The Lang family was able to force the door closed. The raiding party, unable to renter the house took O'Steen's horse and rode away. Further events show that the party caught and scalped a young negro boy, it is thought that he will survive his wounds."

Not sure if related to your John Osteen or not...
