Rachael Bridgman has never been listed as mulatto. Please check your records. Also read Jean Patterson Bible's book, Melungeons Today and Yesterday. In two censuses anyone who had dark skin such as Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, or a deeply tanned person were marked mulatto whether they had Negro blood or not. Rachael was not marked so. The census takers were instructed to do so. A child who was dark could be marked mulatto and both his parents marked white. This is not possible. The census was marked by skin color, not race. I make it a practice to take no one's word for anything. I have to see the original record! I have seen so many errors on this bulletin board that it is pitiful.
