Does anyone know what happened to Henry Alexander Briard (1832-1859??) He was the first husband of my great grandmother's sister.

On FamilySearch.com I find an indexing (not an image) of the baptism/christening of Henry Alexander Briard on 25 Mar 1832 in Portsmouth, NH. The parents were William A Briard and Elizabeth G.

On FamilySearch.com I find the marriage of Henry A. Briard (27) and Ellen Flemming (18) in Boston on 25 Oct 1853. He was a mariner, born in Portsmouth, NH, to father William. She was born in New York City.

Another FamilySearch index says that George Flower Briard was born 4 Nov 1857 and baptized/christened 9 Feb 1858 in Calcutta, Bengal, India. His parents were Henry Alexander Briard and Nettie Fleming.

FamilySearch also tells me about the baptism/christening of Henry Alexander Fleming Briard on 23 Mar 1859 at Allhallows Barking by the Tower, London, England. The father was Henry Alexander Briard and the mother Ellen.

Looking around for Ellen Briard, on Ancestry.com I find her on a passenger list for the steam ship “Ocean Queen” arriving at the Port of New York 22 Jun 1859 from LeHavre, France.
Ellen Briard, 22,
William Briard, 2
George T, 1
Henry A Briard, 2 [somethings] , deceased 14 Jun 1859

An image of the Massachusetts Death records, again found on FamilySearch.com, says that it was the son Henry who died at sea 13 Jun 1859. Born in London, England, to Henry A. and Ellen.

And we find the death of George F. Briard of scarlet fever on 10 Jan 1860 in Cambridge, Mass, at the age of 2 years and 2 months. He had been born at sea. His father was H. A. F. and his mother Ellen.

At least William survived!

In FamilySearch.com I found the marriage, 1 Mar 1865, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, between Augustus P. Lighthill (30) of Boston and Ellen (Flemming) Briard (28). He was born in Austria to Bernard and Helena. She was born in Boston to John and Ellen Flemming. This was her second marriage.

In the 1865 census of Massachusetts we have in Boston, enumerated on 1 May 1865, the following household:
A. P. Lighthill, 39, M, Austria, Physician
Nellie Lighthill, 40, F, Mass
Wm. Bryan, 10, M, Mass [sic]
Mary E. Bearse, 26, F, Mass, None [Ellen/Nellie's sister]
Eva B. Bearse, 3, F, Texas [the B. was for Briard]
Wm. P Bearse, 7, M, Texas
Florence E. Bearse, 4, F, Texas [my great grandmother]
George H. Bearse, 5 mo, M, Texas
Henry D. Barnes, 35, M, Mass, Merchant
Sarah Eastman, 48, F, Mass, Servant
Lydia Smith, 30, F, Mass, Servant
Eliza Smith, 15, M, Mass, (Black), Servant

Looking at the Lighthill family, in 1870, Cambridge, Mass
Lighthill, August P., 34, M, W, Physician, Austria
Lighthill, Ellen, 33, F, W Keeping House, Mass
Briard, Wm H., 14, M, W, Attending School, Cuba
And a domestic servant

And in Boston, 1880
Lighthill, August P., W, M, 45, head, Austria, Austria, Austria
Lighthill, Ellen, W, F, 42, wife, Mass, Amass, Mass
Briard, Wm. H. L., W, M, 24, son, Cuba, Mass, Mass

Massachusetts marriage records on FamilySearch show William wedding Frank A. H. Webber on 30 Nov 1881 in Boston. He is a 25 year old physician, son of Henry A. and Ellen F. She is 24 years old, daughter of Moses and Susan.

An 1890 Boston city directory lists William H. L. Briard as a physician.

Ancestry.com shows me the 1900 census with a household in Winthrop Township, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, consisting of
Moses H Webber, 75, head
William H Briard, 37, son-in-law, born in Cuba
Frank W Briard, 33, daughter

William H and Frank W Briard show up again in the 1910 census in Boston. William is now 43 years old and Frank is 37. He is listed as having been born at sea.

In the 1920 census they claimed to be 53 and 43 and he was born on the Atlantic Ocean.

Ellen died 19 Nov 1901 in Winthrop, Massachusetts, at the age of 64 years, 3 months, and 22 days, of septicemia. (FamilySearch image of Massachusetts death records.)

In the 1930 census William H. Briard is still in Boston, widowed, 61 years old, born at sea under the U.S. flag. He is still a physician, as he was listed in 1900, 1910, and 1920.

On the other hand, the “Directory of Deceased American Physicians” lists a W. H. L. Briard graduate of the Eclectic Medical College of New York, who died about 1929.
