Joseph Obriant/Briant/Bryant of S. C. and Ga
Joseph Obriant/Briant/Bryant married a Jane Charles about 1850 in Gilmer Co. Ga. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 at Gilmer Ga. His residence was in Jackson Co. Ga where most of his children were born. His oldest three daughters Zelphia Josephine who married Wesley Ewing,Mary(Mollie) who married Charles Dilmus Ewing, and Susan Melinda who married Thomas Gideon Shockley moved to Oklahoma Territory during the land run or shortly thereafter. Susan Melinda is my Ggrandmother. These three sisters stayed in touch. I am trying to find any info on the rest of the family. Family tradition says that Joseph was Irish and that he eventually dropped the O from his name because of predjudice toward the Irish. Family tradition says that Susans mother was full Cherokee, that the family could have signed on the rolls but decided not too. The only Charles that I have been able to locate so far, near Joseph and Jane are the Melchisdec branch, but cannot find a link there. Joseph had 2 or 3 more children and they are listed with him on census, but no Jane. Any information or leads would be appreciated. Joseph and Jane were both from Carolina. Thanks Joyce.
