John L. Brewer Jr., 77, VA, obituary

BRISTOL, VA John L. Brewer Jr., 77, passed away on
Sunday, July 27, 2008, in the Wellmont Hospice House.

He was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Bristol, VA, a son of the
late John and Virgie Brewer, and lived the past 32 years
in the Bristol area. He moved back to Bristol after living
in Murfreesboro, TN, for several years. He was a member of
Victory Baptist Church, the Downtown Optimist Club, a
member of the Washington County Republican Party and the
Goodson Lions Club. Mr. Brewer was retired after 23 years
of service from the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a local
car salesman for many years in the Bristol area, also
worked at Atlas Honda and for the Steele Creek Golf Course.

He is survived by his bride and caretaker, Peggy Brewer of
the home. Also surviving, son, John Timothy Brewer and
wife Diane of Bristol, VA; a daughter, Sherry Oxendine of
Atlanta, GA; brothers, Jerry Brewer and wife Judy of
Woodbury, TN, and Jessie Lee Brewer of Columbia, TN;
sisters, Joyce Krajck and husband Frank of Bellbuckle, TN,
and Marjorie Brock and husband John of Spring Hill, FLA;
grandchildren, Mary Madison Brewer, Ivy Oxendine and Wyatt
Oxendine of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Mr. Brewer is so wonderfully blessed with a
network of friends and family that offered encouragement,
visits, prayers and love during this difficult time.
Thanks to each one of you. John fought a courageous battle
with pancreatic cancer, but was always "fit as a fiddle."

A funeral service will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29,
2008, at Victory Baptist Church with Dr. Austin Cook
officiating, assisted by Rev. Scott Price and Ernie
Sprouse. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home
10 a.m. Wednesday morning going to Eastern Heights
Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Shaw Air Force
Base, SC.

Pallbearers will be Larry Bowman, J.B. McReynolds, Roger
McCracken, Danny King, George Price, Ted Bowman and Allen
Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Attorney Bet Jones, Roy
Hobbs, Jim Ornduff, Teddy Bowman, Todd Bowman, Dr. Claude
Calcote, Tom Hayes, Bud Boling, Larry Buckner, Jim Barnes,
Ernie Sprouse, Don Osborne, Dr. Michael Fleenor, Darin
McReynolds, Tom Parker, Dallas Hayden, Jim Arnold, Jim
Massengill, Lloyd Duty, all members of Victory Baptist,
Mason and Logan Nickles and all members of the Downtown
Optimist Club.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from
6 to 7:45 p.m. at the church.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to
their extended family, Jim and Shirley Ornduff, Lynn and
Larry Buckner, Arron and Sandra Jones, Jim and Audrey,
Nita and Jay Barnes, Golda Barnes, Marvin and Ann Tate,
for all the happy memories we made through the years. A
special thank you to "That Boy" Tyler Jones. The family
would also like to thank Dr. Gerry Boccarossa and office
staff, Dr. Joseph H. Kurre Jr., Dr. Eugene McClintic, Dr.
Glenn Birkitt, Dr. Alva Weir II, Blue Ridge Medical
Specialty and the Wellmont Hospice House for their loving
