It's not much, but in 1870 he was listed as G. M. Brewer 21 m w MS with America 24 f w MS
1870 > MISSISSIPPI > ATTALA > KOSCIUSKO P O
Series: M593 Roll: 722 Page: 161
The census indicated he owned land there, that might hold a clue to his origins.

Sam Kelly on the same page in 1870 appears in the 1860 census
1860 > MISSISSIPPI > ATTALA > CENTER
Series: M653 Roll: 577 Page: 370
KELLY              SAMUEL              45       M       W       TN
to be her father, with an Abner Kelly 85 NC possibly her gfather, further down the page.
