My aunt just shared a copy of a photo and newspaper clipping on the occasion of Mary Elizabeth Russell Brewer's 107th. birthday. My descendant was Elias Shorter Russell, Mary's older brother.
Article reads: Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Russell Brewer, 107 years Wednesday, celebrated her birthday with great-great-grandson Tommy Gable at her home, 305 Archer. Mrs. Brewer was ten years old when the Civil War began, and her father served in the Confederate Army. She later married (about 1882) William Brewer, a Confederate veteran, and still receives a pension check for his service in that war.
A native of Smith County, Mrs. Brewer has lived in Jackson, MS 25 years. She has two living sons, a daughter and two children deceased (both within the past year, a son last week). There are seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The party Wednesday was given for Mrs. Brewer by Mrs. Mae Mangum's extension class from Daniel Memorial Baptist Church.
