I THINK I've got some good news for you. I believe your Russell Brewer was the son of a Henry Brewer who was on the 1800 Ashe County, N.C. census. Henry seems to have also had several land grants in Ashe County.
I believe Henry is possibly a brother to both Ambrose Brewer born 1753 and to my Lewis Brewer, who was born about 1760. Lewis Brewer was often referred to as "Lewis Russell" apparently either he stayed alot around a Russell uncle OR
a Russell married his mother when he was a teenager.
Lewis Brewer was in Grayson County, Virginia and died there in 1839. His wife was Agatha Holland, sister of William Holland, who was the father-in-law of Charity Brewer, Ambrose Brewer's daughter! Another of Agatha's sisters was Sarah Holland who married a Cope, and they were in Hawkins County 1830 with Ambrose Brewer!
Note that at the Trousdale Cemetery at Jacksboro, I was there yesterday in fact, Russell and Nancy had a son named Henry born 1807.
Here's something else interesting: Nancy B. Toliver's mother, Tabitha Howell, was the sister of my 5th great grandfather, George Howell Sr. who married Mary "Polly" Osborne, of Grayson County. Their father was old James Howell who died in Grayson about 1819.
George Howell was the father of John Howell who married Nancy Brewer, dau. of Lewis and Agatha Holland Brewer. So we not only have the name 'Russell' in common here, but there is a family connection on your Nancy's mother's side through the Howell's. I also believe that Lewis Brewer and Ambrose Brewer are brothers. Ambrose's father was an old Howell Brewer, son of George and Sarah Lanier of Brunswick County, Virginia. Russell Brewer's father Henry Brewer, I believe is another brother.
