Then pension index number should be enough for you to get a copy of his Civil War record. My ggggrandfather's service record, and the widows pension application, sited all births and deaths of children, his parents and one brother verifying the info for his widow and gave source of verification the government accepted, also such details as him being "mislisted" as Wm. H in one instance then the government making the correction to Wm Washington --also his hospital record, what battles he was in , how he died,where he died-- and the dates he was awol during the two months that his youngest son was conceived!!
