My uncle, Donald Dean Brewer was in the Army Air Corp and was Co-Pilot of a bomber. (ww2) His plane was hit and badly damaged over Austria. The pilot ordered the crew to bail out. All did and survived except for Donald. He chose to stay with the pilot, but as a result they were able to avoid a village and a school. The Villagers found his dog tags and returned them to his parents. For many years after the war, people in the village corresponded with my grandparents. The also held ceremonies to recognize the heroism of my uncle and the pilot.
