At least 2 Brewers from Michigan fought for the Union during the Civil War:

Byron Brewer, Lt, Cop C, 1st US Sharpshooters (Berdan's Rifles), enlisted as Cpl Aug 1861, age 23, at Detroit, Michigan. Promoted to Sgt Oct 1861. Wounded at 2nd Bull Run, 30 Aug 1862. Promoted to Lt 31 Aug 1861. Killed in action at Chancellorsvill, VA 3 May 1862.

Job Brewer, Cpl, Co F, 3rd Michigan Infantry mustered at Grand Rapids, Michigan for 3 years. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Va. Received Kearney Cross for performance at Chancellorsville. Mustered out at Detroit, Michigan at expiration of enlistment.
