George Bretz passed away

I have not been on this site for quite some time. My father, George Miller Bretz, born in Pottsville PA on June 1, 1918, passed away Novemeber 6, 2001 from chronic lung disease. He is the son of Dr. Gilbert(Bert)Bretz and Maude Miller, grandson of George Michael and Emma Bretz and great grandson of Jacob Bretz and Christina, from the Harrisburg/Carlisle area.

In reading the latest genealogy info, I notice that many of the same names come up. The German way of naming children was that in the same family, they could have all the same first names, but truly went by their middle names. For example, in the same family, you could have a Jacob Michael Bretz, a Jacob Johann Bretz, and a Jacob Joseph Bretz. But in their home they went by Michael, Johann and Joseph. I notice that there are many Jacob, but many may not be related, or we may be using their first name while they went by another name. And also within the surname there were more popular names than others, so then too could there be many Jacobs, many Georges, many Johanns. This can make a family tracing very
confusing.

I am wondering if any one has found different names for the same family members, or is anyone else as confused by the names as I am. I have several Jacob Bretzes, I have George Zieger Bretz, etc.
