Earlier last year 2007 Robin (my eldest brother) had a DNA test done whilst overseas, to see if we are linked to Britton/Bretton lineage. The results came up negative. ****************************** I'm sorry I couldn't help more--but what do you mean when you say that results were negative? Have you compared his results to all 13 Britton families in the database (ie at Family Tree, Ancestry or DNA Heritage, and SMGF)? Even if he didn't match any of them, that wouldn't disprove the possibility of a link to a Bretton or Bretton family somewhere since no one knows how many different Britton and Bretton families there are in the world. There may well be, and probably are, more than 13. Many different families who are not related within a genealogical or even an historical time period took these surnames c 1100-1400. Now please don't misunderstand--I'm not saying there is a connection, and my inclination would be to say that Brett and Brettoner are different names from the same root; however, I would be cautious about ruling the possibility of a link entirely because DNA databases are far from complete. One of the biggest problems is that we don't yet have many samples from English families. I keep hoping this will change, but the English have (or think they have) less incentive for testing than Americans. Please encourage your brother to post his DNA results at Y-search and Ancestry. Once they are in the database, then anyone who matches him may contact him, but his identity and e-mail address won't be revealed. If I can help in any way, just let me know.
