Hi Mary ... this is John in California.I have just begun my research on the Volga Germans and Johann Peter Brester and his wife, Christine have come to my attention. As you may know, they arrived in New York in Nov 1896 (Hamburg Emigration Papers: 12 Nov 1896, US Arrival: 21 Nov 1896 s/s Normannia, Hamburg to Ellis Island NY).
They arrived from the Saratov province in Russia, which is along the Volga River. They accompanied many other Brester family members, all of whom settled initially in Cincinnati.Peter and Christine and family we find later in the 1910 Census in Columbus Wisconsin, in Weld County Colorado in 1920 and in Fond du Lac Wisconsin in the 1930 Census.
The other 'brothers' in Cincinnati are Charles (Karl) Brester and Philip Brester. Both families seemed to stay in the Hamilton County area around Cincinnati most of their lives. They both had large families, with many grand children still living.
The 1910-1930 census records show 10 children for Peter and Christine; Jacob 1890, Margariet Brester 1894,Mary 1896, Mollie 1898, Peter 1899, Alexander 1901 Cincinnati, Carl 1903 Milwaukee, Henry 1905, Paul 1907 and Freda 1909.
The Brester's are shown in the 1798 Census records for the village of Kraft, which is south of Grimm (Lesnoi Karamysch) in Saratov province in Russia.Alexander Brester and his wife, Anna were born in Grimm in the early 1800s.They were Karl, Philip and Johann's parents and so, this record may reflect Alexander's parents? We do know that most of the 200 families that initially settled in Kraft in 1767, were Lutheran, and had emigrated from Alsfeld in the German state of Hesse (just north of Frankfurt).I have not researched those records as yet.
More later,
John
