Tom
My great great grandfather was born in Horseleap Westmeath which is only a few miles from Kilbeggan.
There is also a Horseleap in Galway not far away so don't get confussed.
He was born in 1806 and later in 1826 joined the 21st Regiment of foot. They travelled to Australia and were stationed in Sydney and Tasmania then travelled in 1838 to Calcutta India. From there they went first ti Chinsura and then Kamptee.
At some time his wife died and he was left with 4 children. It was at this time that he met my GG Grandmother Mary Brown nee Furlong and married. She had been widowed to a seargeant Brown.
They then went back to England where they applied to be patrt of a fencibled(pensioned soldiers) force to New Zealand.
They travelled by ship Berhampore which left Tilbury dock London on 7 March 1849 travelling direct to Auckland, New Zealand. They settled in Onehunga a suburb of Auckland. He died in 1887. She died 1891.
Through a seperate path I have made contact with a Jane jones nee Brennan. Her relations came from Kilbeggan.
