Just a point of clarification--the Bremner brothers did not actually found merigold, Mississippi. The town is named for early settler, Frank Merigold. The Bremners did, however, buy several thousand acres of land here and establish a huge lumber and farming operation. Further, they established a colony of what has been described as "Belgian indigents" for the purpose of populating and clearing this thickly-wooded area. These Belgians were Catholic, as were the Bremners and Michies. They established the first and only Catholic Church in Merigold which did not last. The Belgians did not stay either. At the time, this area was flood-prone and mosquito infested and the life proved to be too hard. In the meantime, the Michie brothers, related to the Bremners (as stated in Tawyna's post) moved here from Ravenna, NE. Some of them stayed and their ancestors still live here today. Just some notes...
