Somewhere I remember reading that Bremer (or our family spells it Brehmer) originally came from Bremen, Germany. However, before you start looking there, I have been told that it is best to start with the first person you know and work backwards. Since your father died, you should be able to request a copy of his death certificate. It should list his dates of birth and death as well as his parents names, and perhaps some other valuable information. Then if you know they are also deceased, you can look them up in the Social Security Death Index. If they are living, perhaps you can find them in the online whitepages.
