Breland Family Genealogy Forum

Sorry, that it took so long to respond...Have been on vacation. I'm not sure why I was checking into the Breland's except that some of them are intertwined with my Smith family of Mississippi. I have a book here named "Next Door To Heaven" written by S.G. Thigpen. Here's one of the passages in the book, that you might be interested in:
"Another pioneer to this part of the country was a man named Winningham. He had come here prior to 1812. He built a water mill, the first in this whole area, on Mill Creek southeast of Flat Top just below where Uncle Jordan Smith later settled when he first came to this country from Florida. With Winningham was a lad of a boy named H.L. Pearson who had been captured by Indians in East Florida. With the help of some friendly Indians, Pearson had escaped and had made his way to the Winningham place. Winningham later sold his mill near Flat Top and moved to just west of where Henleyfield now is and built another water mill.
H.L. Pearson grew to manhood in the area east of Picayune. He married Rosan Breland, daughter of Elder Reuben Breland who lived on Catahoula Creek about four miles northeast of where Caesar now is. H.L. Pearson was highly respected by all who knew him. He was much loved by my father. Both served in the same regiment in the confederate army, my father as a young first lieutenant. During reconstruction days H.L. Pearson rendered great service in setting things to order in this war torn country. He was a great stay in the church and did much to promote education in Hancock County."
There's mention of many people that lived in and around Pearl River County, MS in this book. S.G. Thigpen also wrote another one named "Pearl River Highway to Glory Land". I was able to get little stories here and there about a few of my relatives. If you are interested in anymore, I'll be glad to see if I can find anymore Breland's in the two books that I have. If you have any information on any Smiths, Megehees or Fortners, please let me know. Thanks!
