My Breedens stayed in Monroe Co. all thru the Civil War but another family that lived in Bradley Co. in 1850 had moved to Whitfield Co. GA in 1860 and moved back to E. Tenn. by 1867 when my grandfather, John Armstrong, was born. I know that E. Tenn. was divided during the war. There were a lot of guerillas roaming the mountains and many civilians were killed. I assume they moved to GA to escape the fighting. If so, Sherman's march to Atlanta must have convinced them they might as well have stayed where they were.
My ancestor (John's father) that moved to GA, turned 18 during the Civil War and enlisted in the Union Army in Tenn. I was surprised that his family moved south but he fought for the north. My Breedens were all Confederates and had corn and horses stolen by the Union army. I heard stories that they buried their treasures (silverware etc.) to hide them from the Yankees. I'd be interested in hearing from others whose families moved to GA during the war.
