Apologies for butting, since cannot help with your enquiry, but am interested in the Scandinavian/Rio connection of that era. My grandfather Emmanuel Samuelson-Sandrid(or Sandvid, born in 1866 in Rio, where his father worked for the harbourmaster - was suddenly orphaned (likely in Yellow Fever epidemic) - taken aboard ship by Norwegian Captain - a friend of his father whose ship was in Rio harbour then - taken to Portugal, but no relatives found to take him in - adopted by this Captain and grew up in Norway - became a sailor- sailing frequently to the Tyne, met and married my Geordie Gran - was eventually naturalised English Have often wondered if this was a likely story! Your query makes it more so!
